God Himself, from the beginning of the world, instituted marriage to unite a couple by a bond as sacred as it is unbreakable.  Since men, having corrupted their ways, eventually forgot the excellence of this union; since it was dishonored by the divorces of pagans; since, among the Hebrews of old, it was not maintained in all its perfection, Jesus Christ re-established it to its original state; and not only did He declare this alliance one and indissoluble – as it was from its very institution – but He even elevated it to the dignity of a sacrament.
